​③Heisenji Hakusan Shrine

Heisenji Hakusan Shrine is a historic shrine located in Katsuyama City, Fukui Prefecture, and is one of the most important centers of Hakusan worship. It was founded in 717 during the Nara period by Taichō Daishi, the founder of Shugendō, a Japanese mountain ascetic tradition. The shrine flourished greatly from the Heian period through the Sengoku period.One of its most distinctive features is the path covered with lush green moss, which gives the shrine a mystical atmosphere. Because of this breathtaking scenery, the shrine is sometimes referred to as "Kokedera" (the Moss Temple).
